Frequently asked questions

An inkjet with cartridges or with tanks?
A cartridge printer is cheap to buy and suits occasional printing, but the cartridges cost more per page. A refillable tank printer costs more, but a bottle of ink prints thousands of pages, which suits a family or office that prints every week. If you print a few pages a month choose cartridges; ink risks drying up.
What do multifunction and duplex mean?
A multifunction printer also scans and copies, and some add a fax and an automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning multi-page documents. Duplex is automatic double-sided printing, which saves paper and is common on home models today. We state both in the specifications.
Why does the printer not print properly after a long pause?
Ink dries in the print-head nozzles when nothing is printed for several weeks. Run head cleaning from the printer menu and print a test pattern; one or two cleaning cycles usually fix it. Prevent it by printing at least one colour page a week and leaving the printer plugged in so it can run its own maintenance.
Which cartridges does the printer take?
For every printer we state the codes of the cartridges or bottles it uses; after buying one, pick supplies by model in the Printer supplies finder. The starter cartridges in the box usually have a lower yield than regular ones. Check in advance whether compatible cartridges exist for the printer; for new models the choice is at first original only.
