- Does an extender help where Wi-Fi does not reach?
- Yes, provided you place it where the router's signal is still good, roughly halfway, not where the signal is already missing. The extender repeats the signal it receives, and the speed beyond it is usually halved. For a multi-storey house or several rooms without signal a mesh system or a cabled access point is the better choice.
- Does an extender work with a router of another brand?
- Yes, an ordinary extender connects to any router via WPS or by entering the password. Features like a single network with seamless device roaming, however, only work within the same brand and series, for example extenders supporting the manufacturer's mesh. Match the extender's speed to the router: a Wi-Fi 6 extender gains nothing on a Wi-Fi 5 router.
- An extender or powerline?
- An extender is the simplest option and enough for one room behind a thick wall. Powerline adapters carry the network over the mains wiring and suit places Wi-Fi cannot reach at all, such as a cellar or workshop, but they work only within one phase and one electricity meter. The most reliable option is always a network cable to an access point.
