Frequently asked questions
- Which USB cable do I need to charge a laptop?
- A USB-C cable with Power Delivery support rated at least 60 W, or 100 W to 240 W for more powerful laptops. The cable's rating is in the specifications; cables above 60 W carry an e-marker chip, without it the charger limits the power. The charger must deliver the same or a higher wattage than the cable.
- Does every USB-C cable carry data and video too?
- No. Cheap charging cables carry data only at USB 2.0 speed and no video at all. An external SSD needs a USB 3.2 Gen 1 or Gen 2 cable (5 to 10 Gb/s), a monitor over USB-C needs DisplayPort Alt Mode support, and a dock needs Thunderbolt 4 or USB4. We list the supported functions on every cable.
- How long can a USB cable be?
- For charging, 2 to 3 m is fine. For fast data (USB 3.2 Gen 2, 10 Gb/s) keep to 1 m; a passive Thunderbolt 4 cable is limited to 0.8 m, longer ones must be active. For a printer or webcam more than 5 m away use an active extension cable with a repeater.
- Micro USB or USB-C?
- Go by the port on the device: Micro USB is on older phones, e-readers, power banks and small electronics, USB-C on everything newer. Lightning is used by iPhones up to the 14th generation and older Apple accessories. A cable with a different plug cannot be used without an adapter; adapters are in the Adapters and connectors section.
