- Managed or unmanaged switch?
- An unmanaged switch is enough for a home or small office: plug it in and it works. A managed switch offers VLANs, link aggregation, QoS and monitoring, suited to company networks and camera systems. Models labelled Smart or Easy Managed are a cheaper middle step.
- What is PoE and when do I need it?
- PoE (Power over Ethernet) powers devices through the network cable: IP cameras, access points, VoIP phones. You need a switch with PoE ports and enough total power (PoE budget), listed in the specifications. PoE+ gives up to 30 W per port, PoE++ up to 60 or 90 W.
- How many ports and what speed?
- Count your wired devices plus a reserve of two to four ports. Gigabit ports suit most networks, 2.5 Gb/s pays off for NAS and fast Wi-Fi 6E and 7 access points, 10 Gb/s for servers and editing video over the network. Switches with SFP+ slots link over fibre across longer distances.
