Frequently asked questions

How strong a power supply do I need?
The processor's and the graphics card's draw plus 150 to 200 W of headroom. A build with a mid-range card runs on 650 W, with a high-end card 850 W or more is safe. Every graphics card lists the maker's recommended wattage and the configurator checks it. Details in the guide Which power supply for a PC.
What do 80 Plus Bronze, Gold and Platinum mean?
It is an efficiency certification: Bronze at least 82 %, Gold 87 % and Platinum 90 % at half load. A more efficient unit runs cooler, quieter and wastes less heat. We recommend Gold for gaming builds, Bronze is enough for office PCs.
Do I need an ATX 3.x power supply with a 12V-2x6 connector?
If your graphics card has the 12V-2x6 connector (formerly 12VHPWR), yes. An ATX 3.x unit has the cable natively and handles the short power spikes of modern cards. An older unit can be used with the card maker's adapter, but the native cable is more reliable.
Modular or non-modular power supply?
A modular unit has detachable cables, only the needed ones stay in the case and air flows better. A non-modular unit has all cables fixed and costs less. In small cases we recommend a fully modular unit.
