Frequently asked questions
- Which power cable goes with a computer, monitor and laptop?
- Desktop computers, monitors and printers use a cable with an IEC C13 connector (the common computer lead). Laptop adapters have either a C5 (three-pin clover leaf) or a two-pin C7 (figure-of-eight). Identify the connector by looking at the inlet on the device or adapter; we state the type in the cable specifications.
- What is a C13 to C14 cable and when do I need it?
- It is a jumper cable with no mains plug: a C14 plug at one end and a C13 socket at the other. It is used in a rack between a UPS or PDU and a server or switch, because a UPS has C13 outlets rather than ordinary sockets. It cannot be plugged into a household socket.
- What should I watch with length and conductor size?
- For a computer and monitor a 0.75 mm² conductor is enough up to 3 m; for a UPS, servers and devices above 1,000 W choose 1 mm² or 1.5 mm². You rarely need a power cable longer than 5 m; use an extension lead with a switch instead. Cables for foreign sockets (UK, US) have a different plug; in the Czech Republic you need type E (CEE 7/5) or Schuko.
