Frequently asked questions

What camera resolution is enough?
For an entrance or yard 4 MP (2K) is enough; where you want to recognise a face or number plate at more than 10 m choose 8 MP (4K) or a camera with optical zoom. Night vision often matters more than resolution: cameras with IR illumination see in black and white at night, those with white light or a large sensor in colour. The illumination range is in the specifications.
A PoE or a Wi-Fi camera?
A PoE camera gets data and power through one network cable from a PoE switch or an NVR; it is more reliable and suits a permanent outdoor installation. A Wi-Fi camera is easy to place but needs a power socket and a good signal, and several of them congest the Wi-Fi. For more than two cameras we recommend PoE.
Where is the recording stored?
Either on a memory card in the camera (usually up to 256 GB, a few days of footage), on an NVR recorder with a hard disk for weeks of footage, or in the manufacturer's cloud for a monthly fee. A home with two cameras is fine with a card; for a business we recommend an NVR. Camera and NVR should be from the same manufacturer or support the ONVIF standard.
What do IP66 and IP67 mean on a camera?
It is the protection rating against dust and water. IP66 withstands heavy rain and water jets, IP67 brief immersion; both are suitable for outdoor mounting. Mind the operating temperature, outdoor cameras usually go down to −30 °C, and remember the cable connector must be protected in a junction box or cover.
