Frequently asked questions

When does a classic hard drive still make sense?
Where capacity per crown matters: backups, photo and video archives, NAS and camera recordings. We do not recommend it as a system drive, a system on an SSD boots and works many times faster. A small SSD for the system plus a large HDD for data is still a sensible combination.
What is the difference between desktop, NAS and surveillance drives?
Desktop drives are built for ordinary use a few hours a day. NAS drives (e.g. WD Red, Seagate IronWolf) are made for round-the-clock operation and the vibration of several drives side by side. Surveillance drives (WD Purple, Seagate SkyHawk) are optimised for the constant writing of many streams.
What do CMR and SMR mean?
It is the recording method. CMR drives write evenly and suit NAS, RAID and frequent rewriting. SMR drives overlap tracks, cost less per terabyte, but slow down a lot during long writes. Where the maker states it, the recording method is in the specifications.
