- External SSD or HDD?
- An external SSD is small, shock-resistant and many times faster, good for working with photos and video straight from the drive. An external HDD offers several times the capacity for the same money and suits backups and archives. For a home backup we recommend a 2 to 4 TB HDD.
- Does an external drive need its own power?
- 2.5-inch drives and external SSDs are powered from USB. 3.5-inch drives above 6 TB have their own adapter, stated in the specifications. On older PCs with USB 2.0 the drive works, only slower.
- Does the drive work with both Windows and Mac?
- Yes, the drive only needs formatting. Use exFAT for both systems, NTFS for Windows, APFS for Mac. Drives labelled for Mac come pre-formatted for macOS and need reformatting on Windows.
