Frequently asked questions

Which adapter do I need to connect a monitor to a laptop?
First identify the laptop output (HDMI, USB-C, Mini DisplayPort) and the monitor input (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA). A USB-C adapter only works if the laptop port supports video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt). From HDMI or DisplayPort to VGA you need an active adapter; a passive one carries no image.
What do active and passive adapters mean?
A passive adapter only rewires the contacts and works where both sides speak the same signal, for example DisplayPort to HDMI on most graphics cards. An active adapter converts the signal and draws power from the port or USB; it is required for VGA, for several monitors from one output and for 4K at 60 Hz from DisplayPort to HDMI. We state the type on every adapter.
Does an adapter work in both directions?
Usually not. A DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter sends the image from a computer with DisplayPort to an HDMI monitor, not the other way round. For every adapter we state which end is the input (source side) and which the output (monitor side). Check which side your computer is on before ordering.
